How to get to Capri: complete transport guide
Practical guide to reaching the island of Capri: ferries from Naples, Sorrento and Positano, airports, trains and transfers. Schedules, prices and tips.
How to get to Capri: all the ways to reach the island
Capri is an island in the Gulf of Naples, reachable exclusively by sea. Despite this, connections are frequent and well organised all year round. Here is how to plan your trip to this Mediterranean gem.
Nearest airports to Capri
Capri does not have an airport. The reference airport is Naples, but Rome can also be a starting point.
Naples Capodichino Airport (NAP)
This is the closest airport, about 30 km from Naples Molo Beverello port. From the airport, you can reach central Naples with the Alibus shuttle (Molo Beverello or Piazza Garibaldi stop) in about 20-30 minutes. From there, take the ferry or hydrofoil to Capri.
Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO)
About 250 km away, this is an alternative for those arriving on intercontinental flights. From Fiumicino, the Leonardo Express train reaches Roma Termini, from where high-speed trains depart for Napoli Centrale (about 1 hour and 10 minutes).
By ferry and hydrofoil: the only way to reach Capri
Ferries and hydrofoils are the only means of reaching Capri. There are three main departure ports.
From Naples
From Molo Beverello port, fast hydrofoils (about 50 minutes) and slower ferries (about 80 minutes) depart, operated by companies such as Caremar, SNAV and NLG. Frequency is very high, especially in summer, with departures every 30-60 minutes. From Calata Porta di Massa port, larger ferries also carry cars (by reservation and with special permits).
From Sorrento
From Marina Piccola in Sorrento, hydrofoils depart for Capri (about 20-25 minutes). This is the shortest and most convenient connection for those arriving from the Sorrento Coast. High frequency especially from April to October.
From Positano and the Amalfi Coast
In summer, seasonal connections operate from Positano, Amalfi and Salerno to Capri. Travel times range from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the departure port. These services generally run from April to October.
By train to Naples or Sorrento
High-speed train to Naples
Napoli Centrale is reachable by high-speed train from Rome (1 hour 10 minutes), Milan (4 hours 30 minutes), Florence (2 hours 45 minutes), Turin (5 hours 30 minutes) and Bologna (2 hours 20 minutes). From Napoli Centrale station, Molo Beverello can be reached by taxi (10 minutes) or Alibus shuttle.
Circumvesuviana to Sorrento
From Napoli Garibaldi (underground below Napoli Centrale), the Circumvesuviana departs for Sorrento. The journey takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes. From the Sorrento terminal, Marina Piccola port is a 10-minute walk.
By car
Driving is not recommended for reaching Capri. Vehicle access on the island is strictly regulated and banned for non-residents in summer. However, you can drive to Naples or Sorrento.
Parking in Naples
Near Molo Beverello there are fee-paying car parks (Parcheggio Supergarage, Garage Turistico). Costs are high but they avoid street parking problems.
Parking in Sorrento
In Sorrento there are car parks near the port, but in summer they fill up early. Arriving early in the morning is essential.
Transfers and taxis
From Naples airport, private transfers directly to Molo Beverello are available (about 30-50 euros). Some operators offer combined transfer plus ferry ticket packages. On the island of Capri, you get around by taxi, funicular, bus and local minibuses.
Practical tips
- Book ferry tickets in advance during high season, especially for weekends
- The hydrofoil is faster but more expensive and subject to cancellations in rough seas
- The slow ferry from Naples is the cheapest option
- Sorrento is the nearest port: ideal if you are already on the Coast
- Do not bring a car to Capri: in summer access is banned for non-residents
- Pack light: the climbs on the island are steep
