How to get to Alberobello: complete transport guide

How to get to Alberobello

Alberobello, the capital of the trulli and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies in the heart of the Itria Valley in Puglia. Despite being a small town, it is reachable by several means of transport. Here are all the options to plan your trip.

By air: nearest airports

The main airport is **Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport (BRI)**, located about 70 km from Alberobello. It is well connected with domestic and international flights, including numerous low-cost routes. From here you can reach Alberobello by car in about one hour.

**Brindisi Salento Airport (BDS)** is a valid alternative, about 75 km away. During summer months it offers many direct connections with European cities.

From both airports there are no direct links to Alberobello: you will need a transfer by car, bus or train with a change.

By train: the FSE line

Alberobello has its own railway station on the **Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE)** line, connecting Bari to Taranto through the Itria Valley.

  • **From Bari Centrale**: take the FSE train towards Taranto. The journey takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes with intermediate stops at Conversano, Putignano and Noci. Trains run approximately every hour during the day
  • **From Taranto**: the journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes on the same FSE line
  • **From Brindisi**: there is no direct connection. You need to reach Bari or Taranto first and then take the FSE line

Alberobello station is just a few minutes' walk from the historic centre and the trulli area. Check updated timetables on the FSE website, as frequency may vary on weekends and public holidays.

By car: routes and parking

Alberobello is easily reached by car, and this is the best option for those who also want to explore the surrounding Itria Valley.

From Bari (about 55 km)

Take the **SS100** towards Taranto, then exit at Gioia del Colle and follow signs to Alberobello along the provincial road via Noci. Alternatively, take the **A14** motorway to Gioia del Colle and then the provincial road. The journey takes about one hour.

From Brindisi (about 75 km)

Take the **SS379** towards Bari, exit at Fasano and continue on the **SP56** through Locorotondo to Alberobello. About one hour and fifteen minutes of driving.

From Taranto (about 45 km)

Follow the **SS172** which passes through Martina Franca and leads directly to Alberobello. This is the shortest route, about 45 minutes.

Parking

Alberobello's historic centre is largely pedestrianised. The main car parks are located near **Largo Martellotta** and along **Via Indipendenza**. There is a large free car park in the Coreggia area, about a 10-minute walk from Rione Monti. In high season car parks fill up early: it is best to arrive in the morning.

By bus

Bus connections to Alberobello are mainly operated by **FSE** (same routes as the railway line) and the **Miccolis** company.

  • **From Bari**: FSE buses departing from the central station, about 1 hour and 30 minutes
  • **From Taranto**: FSE buses, about 1 hour and 15 minutes
  • **Summer services**: in summer some companies run direct tourist links from the airports

The bus stop is near the railway station, just steps from the centre.

From Bari: the most convenient connection

Bari is the most practical starting point to reach Alberobello. From the central station or the airport the options are:

  • **FSE train** from Bari Centrale station (the most economical)
  • **Car rental** from the airport (the most flexible)
  • **Private transfer or taxi** from the airport (about 80-100 euros, 1 hour)
  • **Shared shuttle bus** (available in high season)

From Bari airport, first take the train to Bari Centrale (about 15 minutes with the airport rail link), then the FSE train to Alberobello.

Practical tips

  • **Car rental**: the best choice for also visiting Locorotondo, Cisternino, Ostuni and Martina Franca in the same day
  • **FSE train**: scenic and comfortable, but always check timetables as frequency is limited
  • **Summer period**: book parking or arrive early. The centre fills up quickly
  • **Getting around town**: Alberobello is entirely walkable. Rione Monti is pedestrianised and the streets are uphill with stone paving: comfortable shoes are essential
