The Warm Pools of Sorgeto: Ischia's Thermal Secret That Tourists Miss

A cove where thermal water bubbles straight into the sea, reachable only on foot: Ischia's most beautiful bathing spot, and it costs nothing at all.

Sorgeto is a small cove on the south-western coast of Ischia, reachable only by descending 234 steps — or by sea. Here thermal water gushes directly from the volcanic rock into the sea, creating natural pools where you can immerse yourself in scalding water while the waves lap at your feet.

This is not a beach in the conventional sense: it is an inlet of black volcanic rock where the thermal water mingles with the sea in varying proportions. Close to the source the temperature reaches 90 degrees — do not touch those rocks — but move a few metres away and you find pools at 40–45 degrees, perfect for bathing. The further you drift toward open water, the cooler the temperature becomes, until you find the sweet spot where warm and cold water balance perfectly.

Access is from Panza, a district of Forio, down a concrete stairway that descends along the coastal cliff. The descent is steep — not suitable for those with mobility difficulties — but the reward is proportional to the effort. Evening is the best time: the steps are lit, the cove is half-empty, the sunset colours the sea and the pools smoke in the cool air.

Sorgeto is well known to the islanders but unknown to most tourists, who concentrate on the Giardini di Poseidon, the Terme di Negombo and the other paid facilities on the island. Here there is no ticket, no sunbed, no bar — only volcanic rock, boiling water emerging from the earth and the sea cooling it down.

The best time is autumn, winter and spring: the thermal contrast is at its peak and the cove is deserted. In summer it is frequented but never as crowded as the beaches on the northern coast. It combines well with a scooter tour of the island, taking in the less touristy borghi: Serrara Fontana, Sant'Angelo, Barano.

Sorgeto is proof that the best travel experiences are often the free ones: all it takes is descending 234 steps and letting yourself go.
