Pisa: much more than the Leaning Tower

Pisa is often underestimated by travellers who simply photograph the Tower and leave. In reality it is a lively university city with elegant riverside walks, extraordinary Romanesque churches and authentic nightlife. Spending at least one night lets you discover the real Pisa, that of students and locals.

Best areas to stay

Historic Centre (Lungarni and Borgo Stretto)

Pisa's riverside walks are among Italy's most beautiful, with colourful palaces reflected in the Arno. Borgo Stretto is the elegant shopping street under arcades. Hotels in historic palaces, B&Bs overlooking the river and apartments in the city heart.

• Cons: ZTL, difficult parking, some weekend noise from nightlife
• Average budget: €70-140 per night

Piazza dei Miracoli and surroundings

The area of the Tower, Baptistery and Camposanto. Many themed hotels and B&Bs, convenient for those with an early morning flight (the airport is nearby). Very touristy by day, quiet in the evening.

• Cons: very touristy, mediocre restaurants in the area, far from nightlife

San Martino and southern area

A residential neighbourhood south of the Arno, between the central station and Piazza dei Cavalieri. Authentic university atmosphere with trattorias and pizzerias frequented by locals. Excellent value for money.

• Cons: less aesthetically pleasing, less monumental
• Average budget: €50-90 per night

Central station area

Practical hotels and B&Bs for those arriving by train wanting easy travel to Florence, Lucca and the coast. Frequent trains to all of Tuscany. Not the most charming area but functional.

Airport area (San Giusto)

For those with dawn flights or late-night arrivals. Transit hotels with shuttle, minutes from the terminal. Makes no sense for a tourist stay.

Marina di Pisa and Tirrenia

The Pisan coast 15 km from the centre. Beaches, pine groves and seaside atmosphere. Perfect for those wanting to combine sea and culture in summer. Connected by bus (30 min) or car.

Pisa is affordable compared to Florence and Siena. It has no real tourist high season (visitors come year-round), but prices rise during university conferences and events at the Congress Centre. The Gioco del Ponte (June) and the Luminara (16 June) increase demand.

Getting around Pisa

The centre is compact and entirely walkable in 20-30 minutes (from station to Tower). The bicycle is Pisans' preferred transport: cycle paths and flat terrain. The LAM Rossa bus connects station, centre and airport. Frequent trains from the central station to all of Tuscany.
