Gallipoli is literally divided in two: the old town on an island connected to the new town by a seventeenth-century bridge, and the modern city with golden beaches stretching southward. Two different worlds attracting travellers with different expectations. This guide helps you choose your side.

Best areas to stay

Old Town (the island)

A fortified island of Greek origin, with bastions, Baroque churches (Santa Maria della Purità is a masterpiece) and alleys where laundry flutters between balconies. Here mass tourism has not arrived with the same force as at the beaches. B&Bs in noble palaces, period residences and small hotels overlooking the walls.

Rivabella and Lido Pizzo

Northern coast (Rivabella, Lido San Giovanni)

Closer to the centre, less scenic beaches but convenient. Ideal for those wanting to combine beach and old town easily without a car.

Getting around Gallipoli

The old town is entirely pedestrian. The southern beaches are reachable by summer shuttle buses (lines to Baia Verde and Lido Pizzo) or by bicycle on the coastal cycle path. To explore Salento (Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca, Lecce) you need a car. Lecce is 40 km away (40 min by car, 1 hour by bus).
