How to get to Trani by train

Trani has a railway station on the Adriatic line running from Bologna to Lecce, served by both Trenitalia intercity and regional trains. From Bari Centrale the journey takes just 30-40 minutes on regional trains departing every 20-30 minutes throughout the day. From Roma Termini you can reach Trani in about 4 hours by taking a Frecciarossa to Bari and then a regional connection. From Milano Centrale the journey takes approximately 6-7 hours with a change in Bari.

Trani station is strategically located, just a few minutes' walk from the tourist harbour and the famous Romanesque cathedral by the sea. Exiting the station, simply walk along Corso Vittorio Emanuele to reach the old town in less than 10 minutes.

  • Buy regional tickets at the automatic machines in the station to avoid queues
  • Intercity trains stop at Trani and offer a good compromise between speed and price
  • In summer, regional trains can be crowded on weekends: leave early in the morning

How to get to Trani by car

Trani is easily accessible from the A14 motorway (Bologna-Taranto), exit Trani. From the motorway toll booth the city centre is about 3 km away. From Bari it is just 45 km along the SS16 or the A14. From Rome the route is approximately 430 km (4.5 hours via A1 and A14). From Naples it is about 280 km in 3 hours.

Parking

  • Free parking along Lungomare Mongelli, near the tourist harbour (note: fills up quickly in summer)
  • Paid parking in Piazza della Repubblica, very close to the old town
  • Blue-line parking along Corso Imbriani and nearby streets (1 euro/hour)
  • The old town is a restricted traffic zone (ZTL): do not drive in or you risk a hefty fine

How to get to Trani by plane

The nearest airport is Bari-Palese Karol Wojtyla, approximately 40 km from Trani. From the airport you can reach Trani in several ways:

  • **Airport shuttle to Bari station** + regional train to Trani (total about 1 hour 15 minutes)
  • **Taxi** directly from the airport (approximately 60-70 euros, 35 minutes)
  • **Car rental** at the airport desks

A less convenient but sometimes cheaper alternative for those coming from the north is Brindisi airport, about 130 km away.

How to get to Trani by bus

Ferrotramviaria bus services connect Trani with Bari and neighbouring towns. FlixBus offers direct connections from Rome, Naples and other Italian cities with stops at Trani or nearby Barletta. Marozzi coaches link Puglia with Rome and Lazio.

The main long-distance bus stop is located near the railway station.

Local transport in Trani

Trani is a walkable city: you can comfortably explore the old town on foot in 20-30 minutes. To reach more distant beaches or residential areas, urban buses are operated by AMET. In summer a shuttle service connects the centre with the beaches along the western coast road.

To explore the surroundings (Castel del Monte, Andria, Barletta) it is advisable to have your own car or use regional trains connecting the coastal towns.
