How to get to Monopoli

Monopoli, a jewel on the Apulian coast between Bari and Brindisi, is a port town with a dazzling white old town and Caribbean-like beaches. Reaching it is straightforward thanks to its strategic position along the Adriatic railway line and the proximity of Bari and Brindisi airports.

By train

Monopoli has its own railway station on the Adriatic line, served by Trenitalia regional trains and Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE). The station is just a short walk from the historic centre.

• Bari - Monopoli: about 30-40 minutes by regional train, ticket about 4 euros
• Brindisi - Monopoli: about 40-50 minutes by regional train
• Lecce - Monopoli: about 1 hour 20 minutes
• Rome - Monopoli: about 4 hours 30 minutes with Frecciarossa to Bari + regional
• Milan - Monopoli: about 7 hours with Frecciarossa to Bari + regional

High-speed trains stop at Bari Centrale. From there, regional trains to Monopoli depart frequently (roughly every 30-60 minutes). The connection is fast, making the train the most practical option.

FSE trains also link Monopoli to Polignano a Mare (about 10 minutes), Castellana Grotte and Alberobello, making it easy to explore the area without a car.

By plane

Monopoli is served by two nearby airports:

• Bari-Palese Airport (Karol Wojtyla): about 50 km, the most commonly used. Direct flights from Rome, Milan, Turin, Bologna, Venice, London, Paris and other European cities with Ryanair, Wizz Air, EasyJet and ITA Airways
• Brindisi-Casale Airport (Papola): about 65 km. Direct flights from Rome, Milan and several European cities

From Bari airport to Monopoli:

• Train: take the shuttle or bus to Bari Centrale (about 20 minutes), then regional train to Monopoli (30-40 minutes)
• Private transfer: about 60-80 euros, most convenient
• Car rental: all major companies at the airport

By car

Monopoli is easily reachable by car thanks to its position on the Adriatic coast.

• From Bari: about 45 minutes via SS16 or E55 (50 km)
• From Brindisi: about 50 minutes via SS379 (65 km)
• From Rome: about 5 hours via A1 + A14 (480 km)
• From Naples: about 3 hours 30 minutes via A16 + A14 (310 km)
• From Lecce: about 1 hour 15 minutes via SS16 (100 km)

The nearest motorway exit is Monopoli on the SS16. The historic centre is largely a limited traffic zone, but there are free and paid car parks nearby. Parking along the SS16 at the city entrance is the most convenient for those arriving by car.

By bus

FSE and SITA buses connect Monopoli to nearby towns:

• Monopoli - Polignano a Mare: about 20 minutes
• Monopoli - Alberobello: about 40 minutes
• Monopoli - Ostuni: about 30 minutes

FlixBus offers direct connections from Rome, Milan and other major Italian cities arriving in Bari, from where you can continue by train or local bus.

Getting around Monopoli and surroundings

Monopoli's historic centre is compact and largely pedestrianised along the main streets. It can be explored easily on foot, from the old harbour to the cathedral, from the coves to the small squares.

For beaches outside the centre (Cala Porta Vecchia, Porto Ghiacciolo, Capitolo) a car or bicycle is useful. The Capitolo area, south of the town, is a stretch of beach clubs and coves reachable in 10-15 minutes by car.

Practical tips

• The train from Bari is the simplest and fastest way to arrive without a car
• If you rent a car, Monopoli is an excellent base for exploring the Itria Valley (Alberobello, Locorotondo, Ostuni)
• In summer, park outside the ZTL and walk to the centre
• FSE trains are convenient but do not always run on schedule: allow extra time
