Why staying overnight in San Gimignano changes the experience

San Gimignano, the Manhattan of the Middle Ages with its 14 surviving towers, is one of the most photographed destinations in Tuscany. During the day the alleys fill with day-trippers, but in the evening and early morning the town empties and reveals its authentic soul. Staying within the walls means experiencing this magic: strolling in Piazza della Cisterna without crowds, admiring the illuminated towers and dining in trattorias frequented by locals.

The town enclosed by thirteenth-century walls is small (crossable in 10 minutes) but offers around ten historic hotels, numerous B&Bs and guesthouses. Properties overlooking the Val d'Elsa valley provide unforgettable views. Cars remain outside the gates (paid parking P1 and P2). Prices: 90-180 euros for a double in high season, with peaks during the summer festival.

Just outside the walls (Santa Lucia, Raccolta)

Steps from the town gates, small hotels and B&Bs offer the same panoramas at lower prices. The advantage is easier parking and tranquillity, while remaining 5 minutes' walk from the centre.

Surrounding countryside (Pancole, Castel San Gimignano)

The surrounding hills host highly appealing farmhouses, with Vernaccia vineyards, infinity pools and silence. 5-15 minutes by car from the walls. The most complete Tuscan experience for those with a car.

Towards Certaldo and Poggibonsi

For those seeking lower rates, nearby towns offer properties 15-20 minutes from San Gimignano. Certaldo Alta, with its medieval village, is a charming and less expensive alternative.

Getting around

San Gimignano is entirely pedestrian within the walls. To explore the surroundings (Volterra, Siena, Florence) a car is needed. TIEMME buses connect the town to Poggibonsi (railway station, 25 min) and Siena.
