Where to stay in Gallipoli: areas, accommodation and practical tips
Guide on where to stay in Gallipoli: from the island old town to the beaches of Baia Verde, with budget tips, accommodation types and the best area for every traveller.
Gallipoli: two souls in one city
Gallipoli is literally divided in two: the old town on an island connected to the new town by a seventeenth-century bridge, and the modern city with golden beaches stretching southward. Two different worlds attracting travellers with different expectations. This guide helps you choose your side.
Best areas to stay
Old Town (the island)
A fortified island of Greek origin, with bastions, Baroque churches (Santa Maria della Purità is a masterpiece) and alleys where laundry flutters between balconies. Here mass tourism has not arrived with the same force as at the beaches. B&Bs in noble palaces, period residences and small hotels overlooking the walls.
- Pros: authentic beauty, fish restaurants at the port, walk along the bastions
- Cons: beaches reachable only by car/bus, noisy in summer nights (nightlife)
- Average budget: €80-150 per night in high season
New Town (borgo nuovo)
The modern part between the bridge and the northern seafront. Chain hotels, modern B&Bs and apartments. Convenient for parking and services, less characteristic but functional.
- Pros: parking, supermarkets, easy connection to centre and beaches
- Cons: less atmosphere, commercial zone
- Average budget: €60-110 per night
Baia Verde
Gallipoli's most famous beach: fine sand, Caribbean-like waters and trendy beach clubs. Area of resorts, seafront hotels and apart-hotels. In summer it is the centre of Salento nightlife with beach clubs and discotheques. Perfect for those wanting sea and entertainment.
- Pros: spectacular beach, summer nightlife, equipped lidos
- Cons: chaotic in August, far from old town (4 km), mass tourism
- Average budget: €90-200 per night in July-August
Rivabella and Lido Pizzo
Beaches south of Baia Verde, progressively quieter and wilder. Lido Pizzo is among the most beautiful in Salento. Rental villas and small apart-hotels immersed in scrubland. For those seeking sea without crowds.
Northern coast (Rivabella, Lido San Giovanni)
Closer to the centre, less scenic beaches but convenient. Ideal for those wanting to combine beach and old town easily without a car.
Accommodation types
- **Historic residences in the centre**: palaces with star vaults and sea terraces
- **Resorts and hotels at Baia Verde**: modern facilities with pool and beach access
- **B&Bs in the old town**: family-run, breakfast with pasticciotto and caffè leccese
- **Villas and holiday homes**: along the coast road, privacy and garden
- **Campsites and villages**: to the south, for families on a budget
- **Apartments in the new town**: practical and central
Budget tips
Gallipoli has extreme seasonality: in August prices triple and availability is minimal. June and September offer perfect seas at half price. In low season (October-May) the old town is charming and almost deserted, with very low prices.
Money-saving tricks
- The old town in June costs less than Baia Verde in August
- Inland properties (3-5 km) halve prices compared to the coast
- Booking 4-5 months ahead for August is essential
- Lido Pizzo and Rivabella: better beach quality at lower prices than Baia Verde
Best area for each traveller
- **Romantic couple**: Old Town, fish dinner with bastion views
- **Young and nightlife**: Baia Verde, beach clubs and discos
- **Family with children**: Lido San Giovanni or northern Rivabella, quiet beaches
- **Nature lover**: Lido Pizzo, wild beaches and dunes
- **Culture and history**: Old Town, Baroque churches and civic museum
- **Limited budget**: New Town, honest prices and central position
Getting around Gallipoli
The old town is entirely pedestrian. The southern beaches are reachable by summer shuttle buses (lines to Baia Verde and Lido Pizzo) or by bicycle on the coastal cycle path. To explore Salento (Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca, Lecce) you need a car. Lecce is 40 km away (40 min by car, 1 hour by bus).
