Why Alba deserves a proper stay, not just a day trip

Alba, the capital of the Langhe, is much more than the White Truffle Fair. A city of medieval towers, historic shops and a food-and-wine culture with few equals in Italy, it deserves a stay of at least two nights to be fully appreciated. The UNESCO-listed hills surrounding it, the vineyards of Barolo and Barbaresco, the hazelnuts and chocolate make every season perfect for a visit.

Best areas to stay

Historic centre

Alba's medieval heart can be crossed in 15 minutes on foot, between via Vittorio Emanuele (via Maestra), Piazza Risorgimento and the medieval towers. Here you find boutique hotels in historic palaces, elegant B&Bs and small family-run hotels. Ideal location for experiencing the city car-free, among wine bars, starred restaurants and pastry shops. Prices: 80-150 euros (rising during the Truffle Fair, October-November).

First hill (Altavilla, Madonna di Como)

The hills immediately behind the city host farmhouses and relais with vineyard views. 5-10 minutes by car from the centre, they offer tranquillity, parking and often a pool. Perfect for couples and wine enthusiasts.

Langhe (Barolo, La Morra, Serralunga)

The villages 15-25 minutes from Alba represent the quintessence of the Langhe landscape. Restored farmhouses, wine resorts and boutique hotels among the vine rows offer an immersive experience. A car is needed but the beauty repays every kilometre.

Roero (Canale, Cisterna d'Asti)

Beyond the Tanaro river, the Roero hills are less touristy but equally beautiful. Farmhouses and B&Bs at more contained prices, with excellent value and wine producers to discover.

**Farmhouses and cascine** — The most authentic Langhe experience, with zero-km breakfast and on-site tastings.

**B&Bs and guesthouses** — Budget choice in the centre, run by local families.
**Apartments** — Ideal for week-long stays during harvest or truffle season.

Tips for saving money

The White Truffle Fair (October-November) triples prices and requires bookings months ahead. March-May offers the same Langhe at a third of the cost.
Look for farmhouses with half-board: home-style Langhe cooking is worth as much as a restaurant.
Stay in the Roero to save 20-30% compared to the classic Langhe.
Many properties offer packages with tastings included: these are better value than booking separately.

Getting around

Alba's centre is pedestrian and compact. To reach the Langhe and villages a car is needed (rental available in town). In autumn shuttle buses connect Alba to Fair locations. The train station is 10 minutes' walk from the centre (Turin-Alba-Bra line).
