What to see in Trapani in 2 days

Trapani is a tongue of land shaped like a sickle stretching into the Mediterranean, suspended between Africa and Europe. Here salt is still harvested in pans as it was a thousand years ago, windmills dot the coast, and the old town layers centuries of dominion — from Phoenicians to Arabs, Normans to Spanish. An authentic city, far from the tourist circuits of eastern Sicily.

Day 1: The historic centre and the sea

Morning (3-4 hours)

Start at Torre di Ligny, at the sickle's extreme tip where the Tyrrhenian meets the Strait of Sicily. The 17th-century tower houses a small marine prehistory museum. From here you can see Favignana on clear days, and the walk along the walls is the best way to grasp the city's unique shape.

Climb Via Garibaldi, the Baroque axis with noble palaces and churches. The Church of Purgatorio holds the 20 Misteri, 18th-century carved-wood tableaux carried in procession on Good Friday in one of Sicily's most intense celebrations.

Visit the Cathedral of San Lorenzo with its Crucifixion attributed to Van Dyck, and continue to Palazzo della Giudecca in the Jewish quarter. The tower with diamond-point rustication is a rare example of Plateresque architecture in Sicily.

Afternoon (3-4 hours)

Devote the afternoon to the San Pietro Quarter, the most working-class and least restored area with its Arab courtyards (cortili), where life still unfolds outdoors. The coral-working workshops (a Trapanese tradition since the 15th century) merit a stop.

Descend to the fishing port, still active, to watch the trawlers return and see the Colombaia, the sea castle built on an artificial islet. Reachable via a short walk along the ancient breakwater, it offers a unique perspective on the city.

Evening

Aperitivo on the terrace of the Loggia dei Pisani with sunset over the Egadi Islands. Dinner of fish couscous (the signature dish of Trapanese cuisine, an Arab legacy) in the centre's trattorias.

Day 2: The salt pans, Erice and the windmills

Morning (3-4 hours)

Devote the morning to the Trapani and Paceco Salt Pans Nature Reserve, along the road to Marsala. The pink and orange basins where salt crystallises in the sun create a surreal landscape. The restored windmills (Mulino d'Infersa is open to visitors) once ground the salt.

Visit the Salt Museum in a 17th-century mill to understand the full harvesting cycle. The best period is June-September when the basins are colourful, but even in winter the landscape has a severe beauty with pink flamingos.

Afternoon (3-4 hours)

Ascend to Erice by cable car (10 minutes, extraordinary panorama) or by car. The medieval village at 750 metres offers cooler temperatures and views stretching to Tunisia on exceptional days. Visit the Castle of Venus (Norman, on Phoenician temple foundations of Astarte), the Balio Garden and cobbled streets with flowering courtyards.

Don't miss the Maria Grammatico pastry shop for almond pastes and convent sweets that the cloistered nuns taught her as a child.

Evening

Return to Trapani for dinner in the San Francesco quarter with busiate al pesto trapanese (tomato, almonds, basil, garlic) and the day's fresh fish. Final stroll along the Dante Alighieri seafront.
