How to get to Verona

Verona sits in a strategic position in northeastern Italy, at the crossroads between the Po Valley and the Alps, on the route connecting Italy to Austria and Germany. This privileged location makes it one of Italy's best-connected cities, easily reachable by any means of transport.

By train

Verona Porta Nuova is the main station, served by high-speed and regional trains. Frecciarossa trains connect Verona to Milan in 1 hour 10 minutes, Venice in 1 hour 10 minutes, Bologna in 55 minutes, and Rome in about 3 hours. Eurocity trains connect Verona to Munich (about 5 hours 30 minutes) and Innsbruck (about 3 hours 30 minutes) via the Brenner Pass.

Porta Nuova station is about 1.5 km from the historic centre and the Arena. On foot, you can reach Piazza Bra in about 15 minutes along Corso Porta Nuova, a pleasant walk past historic buildings. Buses 11, 12, and 13 connect the station to the centre in a few minutes.

Regional trains connect Verona to Brescia (40 minutes), Mantua (40 minutes), Vicenza (30 minutes), and Trento (55 minutes), making the city an excellent base for exploring the Veneto and Trentino regions.

Local tip

During the Arena opera season (June-September), evening trains to Milan and Venice are extremely crowded. Book your return in advance or consider staying overnight.

By plane

Valerio Catullo Airport (VRN) is located in Villafranca, about 12 km southwest of the centre. It connects to numerous European destinations with Ryanair, Volotea, Wizz Air, Lufthansa, and others. The Aerobus shuttle links the airport to Porta Nuova station in about 15 minutes (ticket 6 euros, every 20 minutes). A taxi costs about 25-30 euros.

Alternatively, Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport (BGY) is about 1 hour 30 minutes by car or shuttle and offers many low-cost flights. Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is reachable in about 1 hour 30 minutes by train (via Venezia Mestre).

Local tip

If you find cheaper flights to Brescia Montichiari (VBS), know that it is only 50 km from Verona. A shuttle service connects both airports to the station, but check times as services are limited.

By car

Verona is served by the A4 (Turin-Trieste) and the A22 Brenner motorway (Modena-Austria). From Milan, allow about 1 hour 40 minutes (160 km). From Venice, 1 hour 15 minutes (120 km). From Bologna, 1 hour 30 minutes (145 km). From the Brenner Pass (Austrian border), about 2 hours (225 km). From Munich, about 4 hours 30 minutes.

Parking

The historic centre is a restricted traffic zone (ZTL). The most convenient car parks are Parcheggio Arena (underground, very close to Piazza Bra, about 2.50 euros per hour), Parcheggio Cittadella, and Parcheggio Centro (Piazza Isolo, cheaper). For longer stays, the Bentegodi Stadium car park is free and connected to the centre by bus.

By bus

Verona's bus station is opposite Porta Nuova railway station. FlixBus connects Verona with all major Italian cities and many European ones. From Milan the journey takes about 2 hours 15 minutes, from Rome about 5 hours 30 minutes. Prices start at 5 euros when booked early.

ATV also runs suburban buses to Lake Garda: line 164 reaches Peschiera del Garda in about 30 minutes and Sirmione in about 45 minutes.

Local transport

ATV manages the urban bus network. A single ticket costs 1.30 euros (at newsstands) or 2 euros on board, valid for 90 minutes. The daily pass costs about 4 euros. The historic centre is compact and perfectly walkable: from the Arena to Juliet's House is 10 minutes, from Castelvecchio to Piazza delle Erbe about 15.

Verona also has a bike-sharing service (Verona Bike) with stations throughout the city and along the Adige river, ideal for reaching the Roman Theatre and San Pietro.
