How to get to Turin: train, plane, car and bus

How to get to Turin

Turin, Italy's first capital and the heart of Piedmont, is an elegant and well-connected city. Thanks to high-speed rail, an international airport and an excellent motorway network, reaching it is convenient from any direction.

By train

Torino Porta Nuova station is the city's main railway terminal, located in the heart of the centre. Torino Porta Susa, more modern, serves high-speed trains and the metropolitan rail link.

Trenitalia's Frecciarossa and Italo trains connect Turin to major Italian cities with competitive times:

  • Milan - Turin: about 50 minutes by Frecciarossa
  • Rome - Turin: about 4 hours 20 minutes
  • Naples - Turin: about 5 hours 40 minutes
  • Venice - Turin: about 3 hours 30 minutes
  • Bologna - Turin: about 2 hours 30 minutes

From France, the TGV INOUI connects Paris to Torino Porta Susa in about 5 hours 30 minutes, with stops at Lyon, Chambéry and Modane. An excellent option for those arriving from France without flying.

Book early: Trenitalia Super Economy fares start from 19 euros.

By plane

Turin-Caselle Airport (Sandro Pertini) is located about 16 km from the city centre. It offers direct flights to major Italian cities and several European destinations, operated by Ryanair, Wizz Air, Volotea and ITA Airways.

To reach the centre from the airport:

  • Sadem/GTT train: direct connection to Torino Dora station in about 25 minutes, then bus or metro to the centre, ticket about 3 euros
  • SADEM shuttle bus: connection to Torino Porta Nuova in about 40-50 minutes, ticket 7.50 euros
  • Taxi: about 35-45 euros at fixed rate to the centre
  • Private transfer: bookable online

For intercontinental flights, Milan Malpensa airport is about 1 hour 30 minutes by car or reachable by train with a change in Milan.

By car

Turin is a major motorway junction in Northern Italy. The main motorways converging on the city are:

  • A4 Turin-Milan (about 140 km, 1 hour 30 minutes)
  • A5 Turin-Aosta-Mont Blanc (for those arriving from the Aosta Valley and France via the Mont Blanc Tunnel)
  • A6 Turin-Savona (for those arriving from Liguria, about 1 hour 40 minutes)
  • A21 Turin-Piacenza (for those arriving from Emilia)
  • A32 Turin-Bardonecchia-Fréjus (for those arriving from France via the Fréjus Tunnel)

Turin's ring road surrounds the city and is often congested during rush hours. Parking in the centre is paid (blue lines, 2-3 euros per hour). Affordable covered car parks can be found near Porta Nuova and under Piazza Vittorio Veneto.

By bus

FlixBus connects Turin to numerous Italian and European cities with departures from the bus terminal on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. Prices are competitive:

  • FlixBus from Milan: from 5 euros, about 2 hours
  • FlixBus from Rome: from 20 euros, about 7 hours
  • FlixBus from Paris: from 30 euros, overnight trip
  • FlixBus from Lyon: from 15 euros, about 4 hours

Marino Bus operates routes from Southern Italy, with direct connections from Puglia and Calabria.

Getting around Turin

Turin has an efficient public transport system managed by GTT. The network includes:

  • Metro (Line 1): crosses the city from Fermi (south-west area) to Bengasi, passing through Porta Nuova and Porta Susa. Single ticket 2 euros, valid for 100 minutes
  • Trams and buses: cover the entire city extensively
  • Daily pass: 5.50 euros
  • Torino+Piemonte Card: combines transport and museum admissions

The historic centre is perfect for walking, with its 18 km of arcades providing shelter from rain and sun. Shared bicycles (ToBike) are an excellent alternative for getting around.

Practical tips

  • The metro is fast but has only one line: supplement it with trams and buses
  • For Savoy residences outside the city (Venaria Reale, Stupinigi) use GTT suburban buses
  • The centre is largely a limited traffic zone: avoid driving if possible
