How to get to Termoli: train, plane, car and ferry

How to get to Termoli

Termoli, the only port in Molise and one of the most authentic seaside destinations on the Adriatic, surprises visitors with its old town encircled by walls and dominated by the Swabian Castle. The gateway to the Tremiti Islands, it is easier to reach than you might think thanks to its position on the Adriatic railway line.

Getting there by train

Termoli station is on the Adriatic line (Bologna-Lecce), one of Italy's main routes. Frecciarossa and Frecciargento trains connect Termoli with Bologna in about 3 hours, Milan in about 5 hours (via Bologna), Ancona in about 2 hours and Pescara in about 1 hour.

From Rome, the journey takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes by Intercity via Campobasso, or about 4 hours via Pescara. From Bari, regional and Intercity trains reach Termoli in about 2 hours.

From Naples, the fastest route goes via Caserta and Campobasso (about 3 hours), but the inland line has less frequent trains. The Adriatic route (Naples-Caserta-Foggia-Termoli) is an alternative with more services.

Practical tips

  • The station is 10 minutes' walk from the old town and the port
  • Frecciarossa trains stop at Termoli: it is one of the few small towns with high-speed service
  • In summer, book early as trains heading south fill up quickly

Getting there by plane

Termoli does not have an airport but is served by airports reachable in reasonable times. Abruzzo Airport in Pescara (PSR) is the nearest, about 100 km away and reachable by train in about 1 hour.

Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport (BRI) is about 200 km away, with a rail connection in about 2 hours. Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) is an option for those arriving from international destinations, continuing by train.

Foggia Gino Lisa Airport (FOG) is the closest as the crow flies, about 90 km, but has very few flights.

Getting there by car

From the A14 Adriatic motorway, the Termoli exit leads directly into the city: this is the fastest route from both northern and southern Italy. From Bologna, it is about 450 km in 4 hours and 30 minutes. From Bari, about 200 km in 2 hours.

From Rome, the fastest route follows the A1 to San Vittore, then the SS17 and SS647 (Bifernina) to Termoli: about 280 km in 3 hours. From Naples, take the A1 to Caianello then the dual carriageway to Campobasso and Termoli: about 230 km in 2 hours and 30 minutes.

From Campobasso, the SS647 Bifernina is a smooth dual carriageway descending to the coast in about 70 km and 50 minutes.

Parking

  • Porto car park: convenient for the old town and Tremiti embarkation
  • North and south seafront: free parking along the coast, harder to find in summer
  • The old town is a restricted traffic zone: park outside the walls and continue on foot

Getting there by bus

FlixBus connects Termoli with Rome, Naples, Milan, Bologna and other cities. Regional bus companies Lariviera and Sati connect Termoli with Campobasso, Isernia and the inland Molise towns.

From Campobasso, buses reach Termoli in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The bus station is near the railway station.

Getting there by sea

From Termoli's port, ferries and hydrofoils depart for the Tremiti Islands (San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia). Tirrenia and seasonal operators like NLG run crossings in about 50 minutes (hydrofoil) or 1 hour and 45 minutes (ferry).

In summer, services are frequent (multiple departures per day); in winter, the service is reduced. The port is in the centre of Termoli, walkable from the station.

Getting around the city

Termoli is a small city easily explored on foot. The old town, with its narrow streets and Swabian Castle, can be walked in half an hour. The seafront promenade connects the north and south beaches, perfect for walks.

To reach the most beautiful beaches along the Molise coast (Petacciato, Campomarino) or the inland villages of Larino and Guglionesi, a car is the best option. Regional trains connect Termoli to Vasto and Pescara along the coast.
