How to get to Rimini: train, car, plane and bus
Complete guide to reaching Rimini by train, car, plane and bus. Station on the Adriatic line, Fellini airport, A14 motorway and local transport on the Riviera.
How to get to Rimini
Rimini is much more than the capital of the Romagna Riviera: behind the seaside facade lies a Roman and Renaissance city of great charm, birthplace of Federico Fellini. A railway and motorway junction between north and south, Rimini is one of the easiest Italian cities to reach.
By train
**Rimini station** is one of the main hubs on the **Adriatic line Bologna-Lecce**, served by high-speed trains, Intercity and regional services. From **Bologna Centrale**, fast regional trains take about 60 minutes, departing every 20-30 minutes. The Frecciarossa and Intercity reduce the time to about 45 minutes.
From **Milan Centrale** you arrive in about 3 hours by direct Frecciarossa (or Frecciargento). From **Rome Termini** the journey takes about 3 hours 30 minutes by direct Intercity on the Adriatic line.
From **Ancona**, regional trains take about 60 minutes. From **Florence** about 2 hours 30 minutes with a change at Bologna.
The station is very central, 10 minutes' walk from the Arch of Augustus and the old town, and 15 minutes from the beach.
Local tip
In summer, trains to Rimini are extremely crowded, especially on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. Book in advance and, if possible, travel on weekdays. The station also has luggage storage, handy for those arriving in the morning with an afternoon check-in.
By car
Rimini sits at the junction of the **A14 motorway** (Bologna-Taranto) and the **E45/E55 dual carriageway** climbing towards Cesena and Umbria. From **Bologna** it is about 120 km on the A14 (70 minutes), from **Milan** about 330 km (3 hours 15 minutes).
From **Rome**, take the A1 to Orte, then the E45 to Cesena and the A14 to Rimini, about 350 km in 3 hours 30 minutes. Alternatively, the direct Intercity via the Adriatic line is competitive.
From **Florence**, the A1 to Bologna then the A14, about 200 km in 2 hours 15 minutes.
Recommended exits are **Rimini Sud** (for the centre and the southern area) and **Rimini Nord** (for the exhibition centre and Marina Centro).
Parking
In summer, parking is a challenge. **Parcheggio Setteclacchi** (multi-storey, near the station) is the most practical, about 1.50 euros/hour. **Parcheggio Tiberio** (near the Bridge of Tiberius) is useful for the old town. For the beach, car parks along Lungomare Tintori and Viale Amerigo Vespucci have blue-line spaces (about 2 euros/hour). On the outskirts there are free car parks with summer shuttle bus services.
By plane
**Rimini Federico Fellini Airport** (RMI) is just 5 km from the centre, connected by seasonal charter and low-cost flights to European destinations (London, Moscow, Warsaw and others). **Bus line 9** connects the airport to the station in about 20 minutes. A taxi costs about 15 euros.
**Bologna Marconi Airport** (BLR) is the main alternative, about 130 km away, with the greatest number of domestic and international flights. The People Mover connects the airport to Bologna Centrale in 7 minutes, from where trains to Rimini depart frequently.
**Forli Airport** (FRL), when operational, is about 50 km away.
Local tip
Rimini airport has limited flights: for most visitors, flying to Bologna and taking the train is the most practical combination. In an hour you are on the beach.
By bus
**Start Romagna** operates urban and intercity lines connecting Rimini with Riccione (15 minutes), Cattolica (25 minutes), Cesena (50 minutes) and Ravenna (70 minutes). The **bus station** is next to the railway station.
**FlixBus** connects Rimini with Rome, Milan, Florence, Naples and numerous European destinations, stopping at the station.
Boosted **summer lines** connect the beach with theme parks (Mirabilandia, Italia in Miniatura, Fiabilandia) and with San Marino.
The **bus to San Marino** (Bonelli line) departs from the station and reaches the republic in about 40 minutes: an unmissable excursion.
Local transport
The old town is compact and pedestrianised: from the Arch of Augustus to the Tempio Malatestiano is 5 minutes, to Castel Sismondo 3. From the beach to the centre is 15 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by bus.
**Start Romagna** urban buses cover the entire coast from Bellaria to Cattolica. The **Metromare** (coastal rapid transit system) connects Rimini station with Riccione in about 20 minutes, with stops along the coast.
**Bike sharing** and **bicycle hire** are widespread: the seafront cycle path is perfect for moving between beach clubs and the various areas of the riviera.
