How to get to Arezzo

Arezzo sits at a strategic crossroads between Tuscany, Umbria and the Marche, where the Val di Chiana, Casentino, Valtiberina and Valdarno valleys meet. This Etruscan city of Piero della Francesca is surprisingly well connected thanks to the Rome-Florence direct railway line and the A1 motorway.

By train

**Arezzo station** is on the **Rome-Florence direct line**, making it one of the easiest Tuscan cities to reach by train. From **Florence Santa Maria Novella**, fast regional trains take about 50 minutes, departing every 30 minutes. Some Intercity services stop at Arezzo, reducing the time to 40 minutes.

From **Rome Termini**, fast regional trains take about 2 hours 20 minutes, Intercity services about 2 hours. From **Perugia**, the regional line crosses Lake Trasimeno in about 70 minutes, an enchanting route.

From **Bologna** you arrive in about 2 hours with a change at Florence. From **Milan** the journey takes about 3 hours by Frecciarossa to Florence and a regional connection.

Local tip

The station is slightly off-centre, in the lower part of the city. From here, walk up Corso Italia and in 15 minutes you reach Piazza Grande, the medieval heart of Arezzo. Alternatively, urban buses 3 and 4 reach the centre in 5 minutes.

By car

Arezzo is served by the **A1 Autostrada del Sole** (Milan-Naples) with the **Arezzo** exit. From Florence it is about 80 km (50 minutes), from Rome about 250 km (2 hours 30 minutes), from Bologna about 200 km (2 hours).

The **E45 dual carriageway** connects Arezzo with Perugia, Terni and Rome through the Valtiberina, a free and scenic alternative to the motorway. The **SS71 state road** leads to Cortona and Lake Trasimeno.

Parking

The old town is a ZTL but there are excellent car parks on the edges. **Parcheggio Pietri** (covered, near the Cathedral) is the most convenient, about 1.50 euros/hour. **Parcheggio Eden** beneath the Prato park is large and accessible. The **station car park** has free white-lined spaces. On Fiera Antiquaria days (first Sunday of the month) car parks fill early: arrive by 9am.

By plane

**Florence Peretola Airport** (FLR) is about 90 km away (60 minutes) with domestic and European capital flights. The T2 tram reaches Florence SMN in 20 minutes, from where trains depart for Arezzo.

**Pisa Galilei Airport** (PSA) is about 180 km away but offers more international and low-cost flights. The PisaMover connects the airport to Pisa Centrale station, from where trains to Arezzo take about 2 hours with a change in Florence.

**Perugia San Francesco Airport** (PEG) is about 80 km away and is an option for those arriving with Ryanair from London, Bucharest or other destinations.

Local tip

If you fly into Florence, consider hiring a car at the airport: Arezzo is the perfect base for exploring the Val di Chiana, Casentino and villages like Cortona, Anghiari and Sansepolcro.

By bus

**Autolinee Toscane** (formerly TIEMME) lines connect Arezzo with Florence, Siena, Cortona, Sansepolcro and provincial towns. The **bus station** is in Piazzale della Repubblica, in front of the railway station.

**FlixBus** connects Arezzo with Rome, Milan, Bologna and other cities, stopping at Piazzale della Repubblica.

The **bus to Cortona** (Autolinee Toscane line) departs roughly every hour and takes 50 minutes through the Val di Chiana countryside.

Local transport

Arezzo's old town is compact and easily explored on foot, though the climb to the Cathedral and Medici Fortress requires some stamina. **Autolinee Toscane** urban buses connect the station with the centre and outlying areas.

To explore the surroundings, the **Casentino Railway** (LFI) leaves from Arezzo station and crosses the valley to Stia, stopping at Subbiano, Bibbiena and Poppi: an unmissable scenic ride.

Taxi ranks are at the station and in Piazza Guido Monaco.
