Why visit Ortisei in 2 days

Ortisei is the heart of Val Gardena, one of the most enchanting valleys in the Dolomites. Nestled between the vertical walls of Sassolungo and the Alpe di Siusi, this Ladin town combines a centuries-old wood-carving tradition with UNESCO-listed mountain landscapes. Two days let you ascend to altitude for unforgettable panoramas and discover the unique culture of this trilingual community that speaks Ladin, German and Italian.

Day 1: Alpe di Siusi and the old town

Morning: the Alpe di Siusi

Take the gondola from the edge of town and in minutes you reach the Alpe di Siusi, Europe's largest high-altitude plateau. At 1,800 metres, the landscape is a green sea of rolling meadows dotted with wooden huts, with the Dolomite towers of Sciliar and Sassopiatto rising in the background.

Walk the trail from Compatsch to Rifugio Bullaccia: an easy hike of about ninety minutes, suitable for everyone, with views that change at every turn. In summer the meadows are carpeted with alpine flowers; in autumn the larches turn gold.

Stop at a mountain hut for a Tyrolean snack: speck, Kaiserschmarren and apple juice. Mountain hospitality is genuine and warm.

Afternoon: the centre of Ortisei

Descend to the valley and explore Ortisei's centre. The main pedestrian street, Via Rezia, is lined with wood-carving workshops where artisans work in full view. The Val Gardena tradition dates back to the seventeenth century: sacred figures, animals, nativity sets and artistic sculptures are exported worldwide.

Visit the Val Gardena Museum, which tells the valley's story from prehistory to contemporary sculpture. The Church of St. Ulrich, with its onion-dome bell tower, dominates the centre and houses a finely carved Baroque altar.

Evening: walk along the stream

An evening stroll along the Gardena stream, with the mountains turning pink at sunset, is the perfect way to end the day. The enrosadira phenomenon, when the Dolomites blush red at dusk, is a natural spectacle you will not forget.

Day 2: Seceda and surroundings

Morning: Seceda

Seceda is Ortisei's supreme viewpoint. The cable car rises from the centre to 2,500 metres, where a sharp ridge overlooks a vertiginous precipice with 360-degree views: the Odle, Sassolungo, Sella, Marmolada and, on the clearest days, the Austrian Alps.

From the arrival point, the trail along the ridge towards the Fermede is one of the Dolomites' most scenic hikes: you walk along the mountain's edge with the void on both sides. No special equipment is needed but a head for heights is essential.

Afternoon: Santa Cristina or Castel Gardena

In the afternoon, head to Santa Cristina Valgardena, the neighbouring village a few minutes away by bus. The centre is small and peaceful, with a Gothic church and artisan shops. From here the chairlift ascends to Col Raiser, another magnificent viewpoint.

Alternatively, visit Castel Gardena, the medieval fortress in the wooded gorge between Ortisei and Ponte Gardena. The castle is not always open inside but the walk through the forest to reach it is atmospheric.

Evening: Tyrolean dinner

End your stay with dinner at a traditional restaurant, tasting canederli, schlutzkrapfen and apple strudel prepared according to the Val Gardena recipe.

Practical tips

Ortisei is reachable by car from the A22 motorway (Chiusa exit) or by bus from Bolzano. In summer the Val Gardena Card includes lifts and buses. Cable cars generally run from June to October and December to Easter: check the dates. Always carry a waterproof jacket even in summer: mountain weather changes fast.
