Gaeta is one of the most scenic towns on the Tyrrhenian coast, perched on a rocky promontory between its namesake Gulf and the open sea. Loved since ancient Roman times and by Bourbon kings, this Lazio town offers an irresistible mix of millennial history, crystal-clear sea and a mountain literally split in two by legend.

Day 1: The medieval quarter and the Split Mountain

Morning

Start from the medieval quarter of **Sant'Erasmo**, the upper town. Climb the steep lanes to the **Angevin-Aragonese Castle**, which dominates the promontory. The view from the esplanade embraces the entire gulf to Formia.

Descend to the **Cathedral of Sant'Erasmo** with its 12th-century Norman bell tower decorated with coloured majolica tiles. The tower is unique in Lazio's religious architecture. The church preserves the Banner of the Battle of Lepanto.

Afternoon

Head to the **Montagna Spaccata** (Split Mountain), Gaeta's most evocative site. A natural fissure in the cliff plunging to the sea creates a breathtaking vertical corridor. According to tradition, the mountain split at Christ's death. Along the stairway descend to the **Grotta del Turco**, a sea cave with views of turquoise water.

Beside it, the **Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity** (11th century) is set into the rock. The church houses the "Hand of the Turk" imprinted in stone and the tomb of Blessed Erasmus.

Hidden gem: continue on the coastal path beyond the Split Mountain to **Arenauta Beach**, a wild cove reachable only on foot, with Caribbean-like water beneath sheer cliffs.

Day 2: The seafront, beaches and flavours

Explore the **Lungomare Caboto** and the Borgo's seafaring quarter. Visit the **Church of the Annunziata** (1320) with the Golden Chapel, one of Lazio's finest Gothic cycles, and the Diocesan Museum with the original Lepanto Banner.

Continue to the **Mausoleum of Lucius Munatius Plancus** atop Monte Orlando (nature park). The 1st-century BC Roman funerary monument is imposing and the park walk offers aerial coast views.

Afternoon

Devote the afternoon to **beaches**. **Serapo Beach**, right below the centre, has fine sand and shallow waters. For something wilder, the **Beach of 300 Steps** (accessed from the Monte Orlando trail) is a cove sheltered by cliffs.

Cultural alternative: visit the **Bourbon fortifications** along Via Indipendenza, the long defensive wall that protected the fortress of Gaeta, the last to fall during Italian Unification (1861). The fortifications museum tells the siege story.

Hidden gem: the **Elena** quarter between town and sea hides traditional shops producing the **Gaeta olive** (itrana in brine), one of Lazio's most famous food products.

Evening

Sunset from the Monte Orlando viewpoint. Final dinner with fried small fish, spaghetti with true clams and a slice of pastiera napoletana (Campanian influence). Last stroll through the illuminated old town.
