What to see in Bosa in 2 days

Bosa is one of western Sardinia's best-kept secrets. Sitting on the estuary of the Temo, the island's only navigable river, this little town captivates with its colourful houses climbing the hillside, its medieval castle and an atmosphere that seems frozen in time. Two days are enough to explore the town, the beaches and the Planargia hinterland.

Day 1: the historic centre

Malaspina Castle

Start from the top of Serravalle hill, where the Malaspina Castle has overlooked the valley since the twelfth century. The climb through the Sa Costa quarter is steep but spectacular, through narrow alleys and pastel-coloured houses. Inside the castle, the Palatine Chapel preserves fourteenth-century frescoes of rare beauty. The panorama takes in the river, the sea and the hills.

Sa Costa

The medieval quarter climbing from the banks of the Temo to the castle is the ancient heart of Bosa. Houses pressed against one another, with facades painted in vivid tones, create a labyrinth of staircases and covered passages. The oldest Bosa residents still live here, and the atmosphere is genuinely local.

The Corso and the Riverbank

Corso Vittorio Emanuele is the main street, lined with nineteenth-century buildings and artisan shops. Along the Temo, the old tanneries (Sas Conzas) with their red roofs are being restored. A sunset walk along the bank is unmissable.

The Cathedral of the Immacolata

The cathedral, with its Piedmontese-Baroque facade, faces a small square. The interior holds a Madonna and Child attributed to the Catalan school. Nearby, the Chiesa del Rosario preserves an eighteenth-century painting cycle.

The Old Bridge

The stone bridge over the Temo links the two banks and is the best spot to photograph the coloured houses reflected in the water. Early morning light is perfect.

Day 2: sea and surroundings

Bosa Marina

2 km from the centre, Bosa Marina is the seaside quarter with a long golden sand beach protected by the Aragonese Tower. The sea is crystal clear and shallow, ideal for families. In summer, equipped beaches alternate with free stretches.

The coast towards Alghero

The coastal road SP49 from Bosa to Alghero is one of Sardinia's most beautiful: 45 km of bends between cliffs, hidden coves and Mediterranean scrub. Recommended stops at Cala 'e Moru, Porto Alabe and S'Abba Druche. Bring water and sunscreen: there are no facilities along the route.

The Planargia and Malvasia vineyards

Bosa's hinterland is home to Malvasia di Bosa DOC, a sweet amber wine produced using a method similar to Sherry. Some wineries open for tastings: a unique experience in a landscape of hills and nuraghi.

Excursion to Nuraghe Sarbana

A few km from the centre, reachable on foot or by bike, Nuraghe Sarbana is an excellent introduction to the Nuragic civilisation. The elevated position offers a panoramic view over the Temo valley.

Practical tips

• The town is explored on foot, but the climbs to the castle are demanding: comfortable shoes are essential
• The market is held on Tuesday mornings along the corso
• The Festa di Nostra Signora di Regnos Altos (second weekend of August) is one of the most heartfelt
• The Temo can be explored by kayak or boat: excursions depart from the riverbank
• Bosa is windy: always bring a light jacket
