How to get to Caserta

Caserta is known worldwide for its Royal Palace, the "Versailles of Italy," an 18th-century Bourbon masterpiece with its immense park and scenic cascades. But the city offers much more: the medieval village of Casertavecchia, the Carolino Aqueduct and a strategic position that makes it the gateway to inland Campania. Getting there is straightforward thanks to its location on the Rome-Naples corridor.

Getting to Caserta by train

Caserta station is an important railway hub on both the high-speed and conventional Rome-Naples lines.

• From Naples Centrale: regional trains every 15-20 minutes, approximately 30-45 minutes; Frecce high-speed in approximately 15 minutes
• From Rome Termini: Frecce and Intercity in approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours; regional trains with a change, approximately 2 hours 30 minutes
• From Salerno: regional trains in approximately 1 hour 15 minutes
• From Benevento: regional trains in approximately 50 minutes
• From Florence: Frecce in approximately 3 hours
• From Milan: Frecce in approximately 4 hours
• From Bologna: Frecce in approximately 2 hours 30 minutes
• From Bari: Frecce in approximately 3 hours (via Naples or direct)

Caserta station has an extraordinary advantage: it sits directly opposite the Royal Palace. As you exit the station, the palace facade is before you, less than 100 metres away. It is one of Italy's most convenient stations for reaching a tourist attraction.

Getting to Caserta by plane

The reference airport is Naples Capodichino (NAP), approximately 30 km away.

• From Naples airport: Alibus to Naples Centrale (approximately 20 minutes), then train to Caserta (approximately 30-45 minutes). Total time approximately 1 hour 15 minutes
• Alternatively, taxi from the airport to Caserta: approximately 35 minutes, variable cost
• Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO): approximately 220 km, then direct train to Caserta (Freccia approximately 2 hours)
• Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA): approximately 200 km, then bus to Roma Termini and train

Naples Airport is the natural choice, with domestic and international flights and a quick transfer by train.

Getting to Caserta by car

Caserta is served by the A1 Milan-Naples motorway and the A30 Caserta-Salerno motorway.

• From Naples: A1 towards Rome, Caserta Sud exit, approximately 35 km (30 minutes); or ring road and SS87
• From Rome: A1 towards Naples, Caserta Nord or Caserta Sud exit, approximately 200 km (2 hours)
• From Salerno: A30 Caserta-Salerno, Caserta Sud exit, approximately 70 km (50 minutes)
• From Benevento: SS7 Appia or motorway link, approximately 40 km (35 minutes)
• From Bari: A16 to Naples then A1, approximately 270 km (2 hours 30 minutes)

The Royal Palace has a large paid car park. Alternative parking: station car park (paid), parking along Viale Douhet. The city centre has several metered parking areas.

Getting to Caserta by bus

• FlixBus connects Caserta with Rome, Milan, Florence, Bari, Lecce and several southern cities
• CLP (Consorzio Lavoratori Pendolari) operates provincial lines to Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Maddaloni, Aversa, the Caserta area and the Domitian coast
• SITA Sud: connections to the Amalfi Coast (via Salerno) and Irpinia
• Tourist buses for excursions to Casertavecchia from the Royal Palace (seasonal)

Getting around Caserta

Caserta is a city easily visited starting from the station.

• The Royal Palace is opposite the station: no transport is needed
• CLP urban buses to reach outlying areas
• For Casertavecchia (the medieval hilltop village, approximately 10 km): CLP bus or taxi. The road by car is scenic but with tight bends
• For the Carolino Aqueduct and the Briano Waterfall: car or taxi recommended (approximately 5 km from the centre)
• For San Leucio (Bourbon silk works, UNESCO World Heritage): bus or taxi, approximately 3 km from the centre
• For Santa Maria Capua Vetere (Roman amphitheatre): regional train (5 minutes) or bus

Caserta's centre is mostly flat and easily walkable. The Royal Palace park is enormous (120 hectares): to cover it all, you can use the internal bus or hire bicycles at the entrance.

Practical tips

Caserta is perfect as a day trip from Naples: the regional train is frequent, affordable and drops you in front of the Royal Palace. To visit the Royal Park in its entirety, allow at least half a day and wear comfortable shoes. The combination of Royal Palace + Casertavecchia + San Leucio requires a full day and transport. In summer, the park is the coolest spot in the city.
