But there's a third way: choose a small borgo, an albergo diffuso, or an agriturismo with a fireplace, and welcome the new year in silence, with a good glass of wine and a handful of friends. This is the slow New Year's Eve — the kind that leaves you restored rather than exhausted. Here's where to go.

Santo Stefano di Sessanio (L'Aquila, Abruzzo)

This borgo-hotel in the heart of the Gran Sasso National Park is the symbol of diffuse hospitality. Restored stone houses host rooms with fireplaces overlooking the Campo Imperatore plateau. The pedestrian access bridge, lit up in the night, is a sight like no other. Accommodations in the borgo (from 100 euros per night at New Year's) can be counted on two hands — book in October. Lake Bolsena is 20 minutes away for a New Year's Day walk.

Bosa (Oristano, Sardinia)

This colourful borgo on the Temo River is one of Sardinia's most photogenic towns, and at New Year's it hosts live music and human-scale fireworks in the square. The painted houses of the Sa Costa quarter light up, and the Malaspina castle commands the scene. Mild temperatures (10–14°C) make it easy to stay outdoors. Orta San Giulio (Novara, Piedmont)

For those seeking a mild New Year's Eve, Tropea offers temperatures around 12–15°C and winter sunsets over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Seafood dinners at restaurants in the historic centre start at 60 euros, and the quality is outstanding. The church of Santa Maria dell'Isola lit up at night is a powerful image. New Year's Day: a walk on the beach and a cedar gelato.

• Book by October: accommodation is limited and sells out fast
• Check what's open: in small borghi there may be only one active restaurant
• Bring essentials (wine, panettone, board games): shops close on the afternoon of the 31st
• In mountain and hill settings, overnight temperatures drop below zero — dress warmly and check the heating in your accommodation
• Travel on the afternoon of the 30th to avoid New Year's Eve traffic
• Leave DIY fireworks at home: many borghi ban them for safety and out of respect for animals
• Explore on New Year's morning: borghi emptied out on 1 January have a unique atmosphere all their own
